What Causes Snoring?

What causes snoring is a question many people are asking. When you hear someone snoring, the one question that you think of is “Why is this person snoring and what is making him/her do so?” As complicated as this question sounds, the reality is that there are many reasons for this particular ailment. Snoring in medical terms is because of the sound made by the vibration that takes place in the respiratory tract when we are sleeping.

If you are wondering why does this happen only when we are sleeping peacefully, the answer to this is that the chances of a person snoring is very less when he/she is wide awake. Now this is because snoring takes place only when your muscles are in a relaxed state. You are in a very relaxed mode when you are asleep; the throat tissues are soft and are relaxed when we are sleeping. These tissues help the vibrating sound to be heard loudly.

When these tissues are in a relaxed mode, the airways forms a narrow passage due to contraction giving more space for friction which in turn causes vibration. The narrower the passage, the louder will be the noise. All the above causes are also the reasons for the variation in the sound, pitch and tone of snoring.

In a narrow passage the air that we breathe enters forcefully, making a loud sound. The sound of snoring is generally louder and conspicuous when the speed of the air we breathe is faster. This is one of the reasons why many times we also hear babies snoring. Though the word snoring sounds a bit too harsh in the concept of a baby, we can just call it a slightly big noise made by the respiratory tract. Nevertheless you should not overlook this because there may be something jammed in your child’s respiratory passage.

Both men and women can develop this problem. But there are higher chances of men facing this problem than women especially in men who are in their thirties. Men have a wider and a thicker neck than women. When the thickness and the width join the speed of the air inhaled by you a loud sound called snoring is created due to the vibrations.

Whereas, you will not find women snoring very often; this is because a woman’s body produces a hormone called progesterone, which helps a person to get over night time problems. Progesterone is the main ingredient used in many anti-snoring devices.

A person’s lifestyle and health factors are also responsible for causing this ailment. Some such factors are:

  • The clogging of the air passage due to an allergy of some kind
  • When the tissues in the nasal passage dry up due to the anti-allergy medication.
  • When you are a victim of cold and flu; there is a good chance that you may start snoring too
  • When a person consumes a lot of alcohol
  • If you are used to drinking alcohol very often
  • When a tissue of the nasal passage becomes thick and when you undergo a surgery not necessarily for the snoring problem it may elevate the snoring problem.
  • When you have a huge belly
  • Excessive usage of nasal spray may cause irritation in the air passage resulting in snoring
  • When your tonsils or adenoids grow bigger than their normal size
  • Inflammation caused in the air passage due to excessive smoking
  • When your thyroid glands get enlarged or when you develop goiter
  • When the air that flows into the respiratory tract is restricted due to a large tongue
  • Certain medicines you use to relax
  • Being Overweight
  • Inadequate control over the nasal membranes

So basically, this is all the factors contributes to when you are wondering what causes snoring. By understanding what triggers you to snore is vital when you want to stop snoring.
